Recovery of the lower terrace system of the Baix Ter in l'Illa d'Avall (Jafre)

Dams built on rivers represent a barrier to sediment that affects the morphology of the riverbeds located downstream.

From ENGISIC we have worked on a project with the Catalan Water Agency to design a solution to compensate for this effect in a section of Baix Ter, in its passage through the municipality of Jafre. Lack of sediment has led to a lowering of the riverbed level that reduces water access to floodplains, affecting the habitats of the surrounding area.

The solution adopted has been to reopen a secondary arm to encourage suitable spaces for vegetation and fauna species in the area.
